Knights Receive Local Organization of the Year Award from Special Olympics

During a festive evening Special Olympics Broward County held their 2018 Awards Dinner on Tuesday August 28th at the Don Taft University Center at Nova Southeastern University. Invited as special guests were members of the various councils in Broward County, Fl who have supported Special Olympics in a wide variety of events over the course of the year.
Fundraising with our Special Needs candy drives, volunteering at various athletic events held in the county, and hosting a summer picnic for the athletes and families were some of the activities highlighted by Linda Mills, Director for Special Olympics Broward as she announced the Knights of Columbus as winners of the Local Organization of the Year award for 2018. Accepting the award was past District Deputy Peter Chiaravalle, accompanied by a number of local council members, including two special Olympic athletes who have joined our councils.
Attending the dinner were medalists from the recent Special Olympic summer games that were held in Seattle Washington. The evening was highlighted by the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Special Olympics by Eunice Shriver, who husband Sargent Shriver was a Knight. Making this a true evening of remembrance and cooperation between Special Olympics and the Knights of Columbus.
