Sir Knight Joe Espinosa and his wife Jenny had the opportunity to join other missionaries on a trip to Las Matas de Farfan in the Dominican Republic in January of this year. Joe is a member of St. John Neumann Council, #5971 which has made financial contributions to the mission. The trip is organized biannually by Fr. Liam Quinn of All Saints parish in Sunrise FL. Fr. Liam started this mission over 25 years ago and has built a “guarderia” (day care center) and school for the local town. In addition to the guarderia, the Missionaries of Charity (Mother Teresa’s order) also have an orphanage in town for abandoned Haitian children. The All Saints missionaries also donate their time with these children, the majority of whom are infants. There also trips into the mountains on the outer regions of the town where small communities exist. Members of All Saints parish, including Knights from the council, also constructed a small chapel in one of these villages.
Though the center is located in a small town in a remote area of the Dominican, the world of the Knights of Columbus is a small one. During his stay, Joe attended the town church for Las Matas de Farfan, St. Lucia Virgen y Martir, and found the church has its own Knight of Columbus Council (No. 15046). The Knights of the council invited Joe to attend one of the council meetings on his last trip in January, which he graciously accepted. Vivat Jesus!
