Welcome to the Florida State Council Programs. Important to our order is not only growing our ranks, but once a member insuring that every knight and their families have the opportunities available to get involved in ministries of their choice. Our programs specially geared to Catholic Family Life keeps everyone actively involved and insures the Blessings received by supporting our church, families and communities.

I invite you to visit the many State Service Programs available found in this section. Each has a small statement about the program and upcoming or recent activities. For further information, feel free to contact our Chairmen, Directors, or myself. You will receive a prompt reply as we look forward to sharing and spreading our way of life through our Knights of Columbus Programs both General and Charities.

The fourth week of September begins the 40 Days For Life Vigils; they end the last week of October. Please promote this very important event and take part when you can. Another event going on at that time frame is Life Chains. Try to join or start one.

The Run for Life will be starting early part of March I am requesting all Councils to please do a fund raiser for this very important program. You have plenty of time to plan a Dinner or some other event.

We have an Ultrasound Program that needs a lot of funds to help the small Councils purchase Machines for their areas. This is another request for each Council to put on a fund raiser to support this very important program.

If you read your SP-7 forms and the "Surge With Service" booklet You can plan events to satisfy The SP-7 Culture of Life Activities report.

Welcome to the Pro-Life Activities page in the Florida State Council website. We Brother Knights must be on the forefront of defending Life from conception to a natural death in accordance with the teachings of Holy Mother Church. Life is a gift from God and must be protected.

Let us all keep the cause of Life foremost in our minds. As Our Lord loves us so much, we must be his apostles for those whose lives are in danger whether in the womb or the elderly.

Every Council should be involved in Pro Life events in their area. We have many activities throughout the State during the year and we will attempt to update them as they come up. If you have success in any area, please share it with us so it can be seen by all.

Follow the lead of our Supreme Council, on the declaration of our Order's mission:

Supreme Knight Carl Anderson] identified three pillars at the center of the Order's mission: the Eucharist, devotion to [the Blessed Virgin] Mary, and dedication to promoting a culture of life." (KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS, Columbia Magazine, Jan. 2012, p.6, par. 7).

Support the Bishops of the Catholic Church in Florida on pro-life matters of concern in the seven dioceses of the Province of Miami, in their nonpartisan public policy voice and action on behalf of the lives of the vulnerable, voiceless, defenseless unborn.


Act in accordance with the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of His Church, in Charity, to proclaim the sanctity of life and dignity of the human person, providing opportunities for Knights of Columbus and Catholics in Florida to carry out their responsibility to participate in community life and faithful citizenship. Promote and develop a Culture of Life.

Nowadays, in America as elsewhere in the world, a model of society appears to be emerging in which the powerful predominate, setting aside and even eliminating the powerless: I am thinking here of unborn children, helpless victims of abortion; the elderly and incurably ill, subjected at times to euthanasia; and the many other people relegated to the margins of society by consumerism and materialism. Nor can I fail to mention the unnecessary recourse to the death penalty when other “bloodless means are sufficient to defend human lives against an aggressor and to protect public order and the safety of persons. Today, given the means at the State's disposal to deal with crime and control those who commit it, without abandoning all hope of their redemption, the cases where it is absolutely necessary to do away with an offender 'are now very rare, even non-existent practically'”. "73. Abortion and euthanasia are thus crimes which no human law can claim to legitimize. There is no obligation in conscience to obey such laws; instead there is a grave and clear obligation to oppose them by conscientious objection. In the case of an intrinsically unjust law, such as a law permitting abortion or euthanasia, it is therefore never licit to obey it, or to "take part in a propaganda campaign in favour of such a law, or vote for it." The Run For Life is the biggest Pro Life event for the Florida Knights of Columbus for this year. This year's run starts February 14th and goes thru February 22nd. The run ends in Saint Augustine at the Great White Cross at 12 noon on the 22nd.

This run helps raise funds for all the Pregnany centers throughout the state. Just like the disability drive the Run for Life works the same way. When the runners go through your area you can support the runners by sponsoring the runners or having a Pro Life dinner or have some kind of pro life event that your council can support. The runners would be your reason for having your event. All the money you raise would be used for your local pregnany center or any life-giving organization in your area. In other words all the money stays in your area and us runners will help you with your fund raising. Your council will also get credit for a Pro life event with the state and supreme programs.

We the Run for Life really need your help; so many life-support programs need more help than ever. We need to get the message out that Life is so important. We need to help get the message out to have the mothers save their babies and the elderly be protected at their later stages of life. Life needs to be protected and our Catholic faith centers on life and how precious it is.

We could double the amount of money we raise if each council would donate two hundred dollars towards the Run For Life each year. Even if your council is so busy with so many events throughout your busy year you will be helping life so much by donating what ever you can, each year, for the Run. Get in the pratice of putting the event in your council budget each year. This is a state-run event. This run works best when everybody gets together and makes it work.

There are three runs.
  • West coast run goes from Marco Island to Saint Augustine.
  • East coast goes from Homestead to Saint Augustine.
  • Panhandle goes from Pensacola to Saint Augustine.

I wilfrost_dot@bellsouth.netl be updating information throughout the year as well as their schedules and pro Life dinners during the runs. If you can and live close to Saint Augustine try to be there for the closing event. Hundreds of knights there would really show how much we knights support life. There is also a ride for life that goes the same time as the run. A group of knights with their motorcycles meets up with the runners in Saint Augustine. If you are interested in riding up with your bike contact Brent Labreche brent.labreche@kofc.org

Dear Brother Knights,

The West Coast Run for Life will start Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015. This will be our 9th annual run. However, it will be the 27th Anniversary for Run for Life in Florida as started on the East Coast.

The West Coast run will begin at San Marco Council 6344, Marco Island, FL and "God willing" go 364 miles to the "CROSS" in St. Augustine, FL. The plan is to run about 40 miles per day for 9 days, attend Mass each day and break bread with a local council each evening. The running route will be on sidewalks as far as possible or facing the traffic on routes 951, US 41 and 301 through Naples, Fort Myers, Port Charlotte, Venice, Sarasota, Bradenton, Palmetto, Sun City, Ruskin, East Tampa then cutting over route US 60 to US 301 north to Ocala, over various county roads through Palatka, meeting up with the East Coast runners at Crescent Beach for the final goal.

At San Marco Catholic Church the runners and support team will attend the 8:00 AM Mass and should be underway by 9:00 AM. This run is a relay with 1 or 2 runners going for 1 hour followed by 1 or 2 fresh runners going for the 2nd hour and so forth until the miles are covered. We estimate runners will cover 5 to 8 miles per hour. Walkers will be included in a daily mileage tally using their own pace and time (scheduled parts). The support team will consist of minimum of 2 vehicles; car and a pick'up truck. The runners will be transported by the support team and the support team will hover in the immediate area (within 2'miles) for the runner's safety and immediate needs.

The idea for the end'of'day host council would be to hold a dinner/fund raiser to feed at least 2 to 8 runners & support staff and hopefully invite other local councils to come and meet the runners to increase the fund raising potential. The runners & support staff will need lodging for the night and council members could offer to house 1 or more individuals. Council members could also attend an early morning Mass with the runners & staff at a local Catholic Church to kick'off the day's run activities.

To be successful the cooperation of all the councils in the vicinity of the selected run path is absolutely necessary. (Did you budget for $200 minimum donation this year?)

FIRST: You must promote the run starting now among all of your council members in the council newsletters, websites & church bulletins; we need adult runners who are willing to participate one or more days in the areas - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday need to be staffed with committed runners from your local areas.

SECOND: You must be willing to ask members and parishioners to pledge donations for the 360 miles these runners will be undertakings. All donations must go through the Florida K of C Charities, Inc / Helping Life fund. Each Council or District raising $500 or more may submit a distribution form to Helping Life for a donation check for a pregnancy center, abused women & children's shelter or senior shelter in your locality. Smaller donations will be included in the Helping Life fund for special distributions.

THIRD: Support a District or a Host Council's "Run for Life" function with your attendance at these functions. Your participation and council donations can be listed under Community Activities and Pro'Life Activities on your annual reports

Fourth, Councils could involve the local parish youth and conduct mini-runs on the school track. Provide the youth a tee shirt, a certificate of achievement and trophies for the 1st, 2nd & 3rd place top money raisers at each participating school. These mini-runs are at the decision of each school and may be conducted during February and March (Lenten sacrifice). You can also list your participation under Youth Activities on your annual reports.

The West Coast "Run for Life" committee encourages you to get behind this year's run to contribute both time & effort so that Florida Knights of Columbus can make a greater financial impact for the Pro'Life efforts in your local communities. Any runners, wishing to, will travel to St. Augustine to run in with the East and West coast runners. The run will take place by way of Beaches and alternate along Hwy. 98. Runners will run in relay form and be picked up and dropped off along the route. If we are able to get additional runners we may run additional days.

    The Run For Life is an annual event during which relay teams run in the defense of Life. Along the way they raise money for emergency shelters, crisis pregnancy centers and maternity homes for expectant mothers throughout Florida. 9 day East Coast Run is 365 miles beginning in Homestead and ending in St. Augustine.

Dear Brother Knights,

We need help to conduct the West Coast portion of the Run for Life.

Coordinating the running and handling the supporting functions for 9 days from Marco Island along US 41 and US 301 to Ocala and then crossing over the state to reach St. Augustine is after 8 years no longer an easy task for just a couple of members. Our team must be expanded by adding some younger brothers who can make themselves available for a few of the 9 days journey. We need new blood. This is an urgent appeal.

Someone asked you to become a member of the Knights of Columbus. You joined and found a comfortable niche to carry out your responsibilities to the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. I am asking you now to try out for a new and rewarding experience ? taking an active role in the Run for Life.

  • For some who are reading this page it may be the first time you have heard about the Run for Life and I welcome you to learn more.
  • Some of you may enjoy jogging or the solitude of distance running. Others may know of a council member or a family member who does enjoy running. You may be able to suggest that they participate with their feet.
  • Some of you may be inspired to help the runners by providing roadside assistance, hydration and safety along the highways they run.
  • Some of you have shared your homes for overnight rest and provided meals for us along the way. This type of support is greatly appreciated, always helpful and still very much desired.

You will benefit from the camaraderie and fellowship of meeting other like minded team members who are traveling from one end of the state to the other with the common purpose of carrying out a Pro-Life mission.

  • To apply, please fill out (before the submission due date on the Requirements above) the online Pro-Life Report form at the State Council website, Services | Forms.


  • Pro-Life Five Star Achiever Award Requirements
  • This award is now a Council award. It is suggested that the Council's Pro-Life Coordinator keep track of pro life events, members who participate, and date of the event, to help Grand Knights make a decision on the award. The Grand Knight will be able to download, sign, and present this award to the Knight(s) who have fulfilled the requirements above. The certificate is available at the Services | Forms | Council Forms section of this website.


State Council:

Culture of Life Activities - March For Life

As part of an organized program of the Council, with parish and community participation, a minimum of 100 marchers must participate in a local, regional, or national March for Life. Report activity using the enclosed "Featured Programs Worksheet" and the Columbian Award Application (#SP-7). The time spent traveling to and from a March for Life gives members the opportunity to explain to prospects the many ways in which the Knights of Columbus is working to build a Culture of Life. For more information on getting involved in a local, regional, or national March for Life, select the "Diocesan Coordinators" and the "Suggested Activities" tabs above.

December promotion - March For Life (U.S.): Make plans to attend the March For Life in Washington, D.C. If you can't get to D.C., plan to attend a state or local march.

Culture of Life Activities - Ultrasound Initiative

The council must identify a Pregnancy Care Center that is medically certified to utilize and maintain an ultrasound machine, and comply with all regulations of the Ultrasound Initiative to place an ultrasound machine, and follow the published guidelines for obtaining the remaining half of the purchase price from the Supreme Council. Report activity using the enclosed "Ultrasound Application" and the Columbian Award Application (#SP-7). For more information participating in the Ultrasound Initiative, see page 15 of the enclosed "Charitable Programs Plan for 2012-13" ort select the "Ultra Sound Initiative" section above".

January promotion - Ultrasound Initiative: Determine if there is a pregnancy center in your area that would qualify to participate in the Ultrasound Initiative. Begin fund rasing (only after OK from Supreme), either on your own or in concert with other councils.


The Ultrasound Award acknowledges the involvement level of a Council that participates in the Ultrasound Initiative, as described in the requirements below:

Award Period is April 1st to March 31st.

To submit this Ultra Sound Award Form, from the menu select Services | Forms. Use the State Award Forms section's Ultrasound Initiative Report.

Platinum Award:

Any council that becomes a sponsor council and raises a minimum of $15,000 to initiate a supreme match and delivers and ultra- sound will earn this award. (You must Upload the completed form 4886) no later than 4/30

Silver Sponsor Award:

If a District joins together with sponsor council, and each council in the district that raises $3,000 or more to initiate a Supreme Council match will earn this award. (Each supporting Council must upload the form 4886 submitted0 by the host council along with a copy of the check) no later than 4/30.

Bronze Sponsor Award:

If a Council Conducts a Ultra-Sound Sunday Fundraiser and Donates $2,500 or more to the KofC Charity's Ultra-Sound Fund for support and training to Pregnancy Centers throughout the State, the Council will earn this award.

CThroughout the year, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops (FlaCCB), a Diocesan Respect Life Director, or the KofC Supreme Council might email an "Action Alert" - a call for Knights to act in our civil duties to contact our Senators or House Representatives and let them know our position on pro- life bills. It is important that we, as citizens, do this in charity, unity, and fraternity, to speak for the voiceless unborn. Please act as soon as you receive the e-mail and forward it to your Council's Brother Knights, to family and friends.

28/42 Pro-Life Initiative

At this time we are impelled into a battle and just as in all time in our history it is a battle of good and evil with a main theme of an attack on Pro-Life. We as Knights and Catholic Gentlemen should be proud on our stand on Pro-Life especially in defense of the Unborn Child. But it is now time to step up, get out of our comfort zone and get fully engaged. This Initiative is one way to get involved.

28th Anniversary of the Run for Life

We would like all Knights in Florida to be involved With the Run for Life. The Run for Life is an event in the state the Knights of Columbus to raise needed funds to the many Pregnancy Resource Centers throughout the State. We now have three runs covering the East and West coast and the Panhandle. We would like to have all councils to be involved. This involvement could be having their own runs in their areas and/or different fund raisers to raise funds and educate on Pro-Life. Some ideas are to have a 5k run or walk around a track. You could have a breakfast fund raiser with a Pro-Life theme.

42nd Anniversary of the March for Life

The second part of the Initiative is the Anniversary of the March for Life in Washington D.C. We would like to have as many Knights and family members as possible to participate in this historical event in January. With 5-6 months remaining each District or Council can start now to raise funds to support a bus to travel to this event. The buses seat 50-60 people and would cost each individual $200-300. Fundraisers would defray the cost. If you have never been to this event I can tell you that it is an awesome event with well over 200,000 in attendance. We would like to see if we can get a total of 1.5 million this next time which is the amount of babies being aborted each year.

Our Church is in a changing world and Christians are searching for ways to further the ministry of the Catholic Church. If the Church is going to exist and more importantly thrive in today's society, men and women throughout our community must come forward and take an active part. As Knights of Columbus, our prime responsibility is to encourage and promote that action. The aim of our Church Activities is to develop close ties between councils and parishes, which are mutually beneficial and helpful to members in developing their lives of faith, worship and service.

Church Activates Directors at the state and local council level are responsible for K of C Parish Round tables and to aid the church in Lay Apostolate programs. They Evangelize utilizing services such as the Catholic Information Service (CIS), located at the Supreme Office. Church Activates help in the area of Vocations, prompting the RSVP and Vocations Fund, and support seminarian or postulant. Finally, they work to support Parochial Services, Religious Devotions, and Keep Christ in Christmas.

The Florida State Council is pleased to continue our Vocation Program, The Altar Server of the Year Award.

The Church needs religious vocations right now and the recognition of distinguished Altar Servers is but a step to promoting this goal.

We hope that all Councils will make a serious attempt to participate in this very important Program. Our need for Vocations has never been greater than now!

Why should every council and assembly get involved in this new program?

If the Catholic Church is going to exist and more importantly thrive in today's society, men and women throughout our communities must come forward and take an active part. As Knights of Columbus, our prime responsibility is to encourage and promote that action. The aim of all our Church Activities is to develop close ties between councils and parishes, which are mutually beneficial and helpful to members in developing their lives of faith, worship and service.

The Knights of Mercy Program is specifically designed to develop a close and lasting working relationship with each parish and provide an excellent and very fruitful evangelization program that will cause these parishes to thrive and grow in today’s world. Celebrated correctly, Divine Mercy Sunday is the ultimate evangelization tool. The Knights of Mercy Program ensures that each parish is properly prepared to do it’s very best to use Divine Mercy Sunday to evangelize.

The program has been utilized in many parishes throughout the Order and has proven to be very well accepted by pastors and other clergy. Priests will feel a closer bond with the Knights after they witness the fruits of the program. There could be a no greater act of charity then to help to save souls, and this program can save them in great numbers. The grace of Divine Mercy Sunday’s plenary indulgence, can lead a soul straight to Heaven with no punishment at all.

The Knights of Mercy Program is designed to bring about a permanent evangelization effort built around a solid and thorough understanding of Divine Mercy Sunday. One of the most beneficial things that we can do is to ensure that pastors understand the potential of correctly celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday. There are two main categories: one is providing the necessary information to priests; and the other is providing a Divine Mercy image for the parish church.

If an adequate image of Divine Mercy already exists in the parish church, then the main focus would be on providing information to the pastor about using Divine Mercy Sunday as a tool for evangelization and to offer to provide any informational resources necessary to help him.

The available information from www.DivineMercySunday.com website, which is owned by a member of the Knights of Columbus, was derived from collaboration efforts with the Vatican, Bishops, and Priests, including other experts in Divine Mercy. Most of the guidance comes from the 2002 Vatican decree establishing the permanent Plenary Indulgence that was issued specifically for Divine Mercy Sunday which includes the instructions and duties for priests.

Keep Christ in Christmas is an evangelization program of the Knights of Columbus. Knights in 40 states and the provinces of Nova Scotia and Ontario have sold more then 13 million religious Christmas cards thru this program over the past 13 years. It is a wonderful program to bring the presence of the incarnation of Christ to the world.

In a time when all things religious are being discouraged and swept away, it's refreshing to know that the Order sponsors the 'Keep Christ in Christmas' campaign to remind people that Christmas is above all a holy day celebrating the birth of Christ.

Your continue support of the Keep Christ in Christmas Program is very important more today then anytime before. We must be the leaders in reminding other of the true meaning of Christmas. It is the celebration of the Birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ. Your participate in the KCIC Programs (Christmas Cards, Christmas Seals and Billboards/Posters).

We as members of the Knights of Columbus and have dedicated our lives to Our Blessed Mother’s team and have the opportunity to share with all of the faithful here in Florida another program honoring our patroness, the Blessed Virgin Mary.

On September 8, 2013, we will launch another Knights of Columbus Marian Prayer Program, this time dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.

May Our Lady accompany our Church and all the members of our Order throughout the state of Florida. Like her, we want to be open to the Holy Spirit and available to accomplish God’s plan in today’s world. And following Our Lady's example, we want to leave with haste as she did, to share the Good News of the Gospel to a world that needs the Hope and the Truth and the Love of Jesus Christ


At the initiative of our Worthy Supreme Knight, we inaugurate the 16th prayer program of the Knights of Columbus, conducted using a sacred image as its centerpiece. In 1979, the first such program was begun with images of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas. In preparation for the 1982 Centennial of the Order, the second prayer program was initiated, which also highlighted the Immaculate Conception. Over the years, the Blessed Mother has also been honored by her Knights under her titles of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Our Lady of Czestochowa, Our Lady of Pochaiv, Our Lady of the Assumption, Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Charity.

These Order wide programs of Marian Prayer have gathered together more than 16 million people at some 140,000 prayer services conducted at local councils and parishes.

As we inaugurate this new Marian Prayer Program, may Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, patroness of the Diocese of Quebec, our Mother and the Mother of the Church, the star of New Evangelization, lead us to her Son, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the World.

SUBJECT: Florida State Council Investigation of Project Moses


It has come to the attention of the Florida State Council that there may be a problem with the program being administered by the Project Moses Campaign. Some councils have reported delays in receiving the monument after submitting their donations and it appears the Project Moses Campaign has removed its website. This issue is being investigated by the Florida State Council and Supreme is being notified. For now the following recommendations should be followed by all councils.

1. If you have held a fundraising event for Project Moses and have submitted your donation and have not received your monument, please contact the State Advocate for further instructions.

2. If you currently have scheduled a fundraising event for Project Moses and cannot postpone or cancel the event - upon completion of the event, please hold the funds collected in the council general fund and contact the State Advocate for further instructions.

. If you currently have a scheduled fundraising event for Project Moses and you are able to postpone the event, please do so by announcing that the “Project Moses event has been postponed until further notice.”

Additional information will be posted on the state website as it becomes available. We encourage all councils that were considering a Project Moses fundraising event to consider one for our other worthy charitable programs.

The State of Florida is fifty-two thousand members strong and only five thousand Guild members. That is less than 10% of our membership. Are you a member? We, as loyal Knights, have an obligation to belong to the Guild, and pray for the Canonization of The Venerable Father McGivney. Among the reason Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus was to help Catholic men practice their faith and thus become better husbands and fathers and making God the first priority in their lives. Father McGivney knew that men would have a greater opportunity to put God first if they engaged in works of charity and experienced fraternity with other men who are striving to take their faith seriously.

The meaning of Liturgical

It means a church that conducts it's worship services in a pre-planned order. This is done so that all aspects of worship are touched upon, i.e. praise, prayer, preaching, Bible readings, the sacrament(s) etc. Some churches have special pre-planned liturgies for different church events, Christmas, or Easter for example. The degree that services are liturgical varies according to the denomination, and even from church to church within any given denomination.

Conducting a "Keep Christ in Christmas" Poster Contest is an excellent way to get the young people of your community thinking about the true meaning of Christmas. It is also an easy project as existing structures like schools, RE Programs, CYO's, Squires circles, etc., can do a lot of preliminary work

The goal of this program is to create/increase awareness among young people about the true meaning of Christmas encouraging them to speak to other youngsters "in their own language" to address the issues.

These are the steps/tips in conducting a poster contest:

The council's youth activities director, in consultation with the grand knight, should select a team that will administer the contest. This team will be involved in all phases of the contest: organization, publicity, judging, prizes, etc. Columbian Squires circles should work with their sponsoring councils in conducting the contest.

Once the team is in place, the next step is to contact all schools, both public and private, in your community to publicize your contest. Solicit the support of the teachers and administrators; ask them to encourage their students to participate.

The council should be "ready to go before Thanksgiving, so that the participants can get right to work. A suggested time frame would be for the participants to complete working on their art work by December 15th.

Judging at the local level to take place by end of December. District and Regional judging should take place by mid-January, with state winners chosen by the end of January.

Entries for the international level of competition must be received at the Supreme Council office by February 15th. International winners would be announced in March.

Recognize everyone participating by presenting participation certificates to all who submit entries, and council champion certificates to your council's winners. Encourage each school to develop some type of recognition for the winning entries in that particular school.

With many families with young children continuing to struggle in these challenging economic times, there has never been a better time for Knights of Columbus councils to help by providing warm winter coats to children in their communities through the Order's Coats for Kids program.

For the 2011/12 winter season to date, 698 Knights of Columbus councils purchased and distributed 26,028 coats. In addition the Supreme Council also purchased 5,500 coats that were sent to several state councils for distribution, for a total of 31,528 coats given out. This is a significant increase over the 2010/11 number of 17,626 coats distributed.

Since 2009, the Knights of Columbus has distributed more than 70,000 coats to kids throughout the United States and Canada.

All Knights of Columbus councils are invited to participate in Coats for Kids this Winter. Simply complete and submit the Coats for Kids order form, and you'll get your coats in about two to three weeks. The minimum order is one case of 12 coats, and the cost is $195 per case ($16.25 per coat). Shipping charges are added to each order, but the Supreme Council works with our supplier to ship via the most economical means possible, and the Supreme Council will pick up half of the shipping costs on every order placed by a Knights of Columbus council. Each case of high-quality coats will contain either boys coats or girls coats, both of which come in a variety of sizes (4-16 for girls, 4-18 for boys), styles and colors.

Did you know that Council Activities are a great way to bring brother Knights together, not only in your council but with brothers from other councils, not only in your District but throughout the state of Florida? There are two State tournaments, the Golf Tournament and the Bowling Tournament. Both bring a opportunity to meet and play with brothers from around the state as well as raising funds for charity. Consider the possibilities for your own council; Golf Outings, Bowling Tournaments, Soccer, Softball or Baseball games within your council or between councils. If they are open to non-members who are practical Catholics, it is a great way to recruit new members to the Knights of Columbus. Organizing a trip to a baseball or football or basketball game within your council or jointly with other councils also brings brothers closer together and can also be a recruitment tool. When participating in such events we celebrate a multitude of blessing we have and displays the principles and virtues our founder, Fr. Michael J. McGivney laid down for us.

- One of our primary goals in our athletic events is to support others such as Florida Special Olympics, Vocations, Seminarians or any other or our many outreach initiatives. Our efforts helps others in need.
- Programs such as open house, Father/Daughter or Father/Son lunches, Birthday or Anniversary parties, holiday dinner/dances, and picnics bring people together rand maintains a strong, friendly and fraternal atmosphere in the council and between council and makes new members feel welcomed.
- Nothing displays unity like team sports. Whether working with or competing with other councils there is a sense of Brotherhood and Unity. When we participate in one of the State Tournaments we meet and socialize with members from around the state and gain in unity with one another both fraternally and spiritually.
My brothers, consider attending, participating, or volunteering or supporting one of our upcoming athletic events. We are a ‘Family Fraternal Service Organization’ and families are the foundation of society and are at the core of the Knights of Columbus. The Florida Knights of Columbus State Council recognizes the importance of the family. Every council in Florida has family activities which have attracted men of the parish who want to be a Knight and be like us. Let us know about your family activity by reporting it using the State online form FSC04108 Family Activities Report. We will pick an activity and highlight here from time to time. Be sure to include a couple of pictures.

Family of the Month

Please read this because you may have never heard this before – The council ‘Family of the Month’ does not need to be the family of a member of the Knights of Columbus. Here’s the catch, since you won’t have a valid Member Number to include on the form when it is processed by Fraternal Services, 1) while the council gets credit for submission, 2) the family is not entered into the drawing where the Supreme Council selects 100 families from those nominated by local councils for further recognition. This expands the award a recruiting tool as well as a recognition award for a deserving local family.

Founded in 1925 by Brother Barnabas McDonald, the Columbian Squires was formed out of a necessity for the improvement and betterment of the Spiritual, Cultural, Civic, Social, and Physical knowledge and abilities of our Catholic Young Men. Brother Barnabas, working with the fathers and Brother Knights in his area, developed this organization to do just that!

The Program first came to Florida with the establishment of Father Maher Circle #8 in Jacksonville on May 1st, 1927. This was the First Circle Established south of the Mason-Dixon Line, and from there we have only grown and expanded upon that original mission. Now, nearly 90 years later we stand with 38 Circles and 400 Squires Statewide. From that however, we must grow in order to better accomplish that mission! Let us, especially in this day and age promote this program, and ensure the future of not only the Order, but the Church as a whole!

We have an epidemic in our modern society directly affecting our Youth on a daily basis. I am referring to a loss of their Catholic faith; the faith that many of us cherish, does not have that same effect on our children when they hit their teenage and young adult years. The problem being for many is that outside of their attendance at Mass, in Catholic School, and in our home; the influence of faith is hardly ever seen or understood. This only gets worse once they get older, as they grow further from home, and become absorbed in the world around them. When that happens mass becomes a chore rather than a blessing, and prayer becomes a mere motion to go through rather than a connection with our Lord. Our youth are losing their faith, and as we watch helplessly you might ask, what can we do to stop this?!

We have a solution to this problem; the Columbian Squires is a Catholic Youth Organization, created to provide for the spiritual, cultural, civic, social and physical improvement of its members. The Squire's Programs strengthen the mind, body, and soul while developing within them basic leadership skills and abilities; all of this surrounded by an increased and inspired growth with an appreciation of our faith. So that once they graduate from the Squires, they are not only prepared to face the world as a Catholic, but have the leadership skills necessary to bring others to find the same Truth.

The Catholic Squires is an international fraternity, established in 1925 consisting of approximately 40,000 Catholic young men, ages 10 to 18, in over 2,500 circles worldwide. Circles exist, or have existed, throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Panama, Cuba, the Bahamas, the Virgin Islands, Guam, and on U.S. military bases abroad. Local Knights of Columbus councils and assemblies sponsor Squire Circles, of which we are home to 35 Circles, and over 400 Squires. The Squires, alongside the Knights involve themselves in various programs to benefit the Church, the community, as well as themselves in recreational and social activities.

We need your help to continue this mission! We are looking for your sons to become a part of this great organization, and join the ranks of thousands with the same mindset and goals throughout the world. Locally, we are still building, and this is an opportunity for your child to become part of something great! Please consider and reflect upon this, my door is always open to answer any questions which may arise, and by taking the time to read this I hope you can find reassurance in knowing that TOGETHER we can build the Church, and Build the Body of Christ. The mission of the Florida State Youth Team is to provide encouragement for the Knights of Columbus Councils in Florida to participate in youth programs designed by the Supreme Council, the Florida State Council, and local Councils. This provides an outreach to youth in our area, keeps members active, and provides a path to recruit new men for our Order.

Today's youth are the leaders of tomorrow. Effective youth activities teach young people valuable life lessons on leadership, responsibliity, morality and compassion. Numerous avenues are open to the Knights of Columbus which demonstrate our support of today's youth.

As the official youth organization of the Knights of Columbus, the Columbian Squires is deserving of primary consideration in any council's youth program. To reach more youth, many councils extend support to other youth programs such as Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) or Catholic Youth Ministry (CYM), Big Brother/Big Sisters and scouting programs for both boys and girls.

Through the sponsorship of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship Basketball and the Soccer Challenge as well as the Special Olympics, the KofC councils support Athletic programs that demonstrate sportsmanship at all levels of competition.

Educational Program such as the Knights of Columbus Poster and Essay Contests and the Spelling Bee encourage the exercise of the mind.

The featured program in the Youth area is Coats for Kids. Meeting the minimum requirements in this activity allows the Council to fulfill all of the Youth activity requirements for the SP-7 Form. Free Throw Championship

Since 1972, Councils have sponsored the Knights of Columbus International Basketball Free Throw Championship for boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14. The competition is set up to have the contestants compete within their own gender and age group. All competition starts at the local level. Winners move on to District, Regional and State or Province levels, and some make it to the International level.

The Free Throw Championship is one of the fun youth programs your Council can sponsor during its fraternal year. To sponsor a competition, all your Council needs is the Free Throw Championship Kit (#FT- KIT), a couple of basketballs, a hoop and a bunch of kids. It is a great way to get out into the public and introduce the Order to your community – while providing Youths with a rewarding activity that yields a chance for Local, State or Provincial and International recognition.

The Knights of Columbus sponsor an essay contest annually. Contestants write an essay on the theme "The Importance of Religious Freedom."

The essay contest is open to all Catholic youth in grades 8 through 12 who attend parochial, private, or public schools.

Competition starts at the Council level. Winners can progress to the District, State, and International level competitions.

Competition Timetable :

Council - Complete anytime from September to January. Submissions are judged by group, with the winner from each group moving on to the next level. There are five groups for essay; 8th Grade, 9th Grade, 10th Grade, 11th Grade, and 12th Grade.

District - DD sets a date in late January/early February for councils to submit the council winners for the district competition. DD completes judging during February.

Regional - There is no regional competition for poster and essay. District winners are submitted by DD directly to State Youth Activities Director. The address is: Dan McIntyre, 313 Sweetbrier Branch Ln, St Johns, FL. 32259.

State - Due date for district winners to be received for the state competition is February 28th. State winners will be submitted to Supreme for the international competition. State winners will earn a trophy which will be presented to the DD at the state convention.

Substance Abuse Poster Contest

  • The Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse Poster Contest is open to all youth from ages 8 through 14. Posters must display one of two themes:
    • Alcohol Awareness and Abuse
    • Drug Awareness and Abuse
  • Competition is divided into two age groups; 8 - 11, and 12-14.
  • A competitor may only enter one poster (after choosing theme).
  • A Council, District, and State may have up to 4 winners (one from each category and age group).
  • Judging
    • Judging should be done by teams composed of young people, Knights, teachers, administrators, students, substance abuse counselors, and law enforcement officials. In keeping with the theme of giving young people the opportunity to develop their own solutions to the challenges they face, it's particularly important to involve young people in all phases of the judging process.
    • A 100-point scoring system will be used to determine the winners. 30 Points: Slogan - How clearly is the theme presented? 30 Points: Visuals - How well do the visuals convey the message? 40 Points: Overall impact - How effective was the poster in capturing your attention and causing you to reflect on the topic?

Soccer Challenge

The Knights of Columbus Soccer Challenge is a competition designed for players to demonstrate the most basic soccer skill - the penalty kick. Open to all boys and girls in your community, ages 9-14.
    Council will need:
  • Facility to hold the competition
  • Goal divided and marked per the guidelines in the kit
  • Soccer balls of the proper size
  • Knights to register participants, chase balls, judge, and score
  • Good advertising, including "word of mouth" of council members

Regional Soccer Schedule 2014

The Florida State Council Spelling Bee is for all youth in Grades 5 through 10. The competition is divided into three groups; Grade 5&6, Grade 7&8, and Grade 9&10. The State Spelling Bee rules and word lists are the Florida State Council Spelling Bee Program Guide.

The State Spelling Bee Program this year has been completely revamped and overhauled! As always it is divided into 3 levels, 5th and 6th Grade; 7th and 8th Grade; and 9th and 10th Grade. In the new "Spelling Bee Co-ordinators Guide", you will find everything you need to run your Spelling Bee Program! Inside are the Master Word Lists, Practice Lists, all forms and contacts that you will need. I look forward to working with all of you over the course of the next season, and I hope to hear feedback from everyone as to how the Guide worked for you!
